Ian Curtis (1956–1980) lead singer of the post-punk band JOY DIVISION committed suicide in may 18 1980. Curtis was the leader of the joy division since 1977, his unique performance and intriguing voice combined with the sound of the drums and electric guitars makes the motion picture a no ending song.
Anton Corbijn became photographer and director of musicians giving him the courage to direct CONTROL, inspired in the book "Touching from a distance" of Deborah Curtis. Corbijn creates a film strictly black and white, that gives that sensation of music and depression, love and insanity, disorder and control.
Sam Riley plays Ian Curtis in a way that gives me shivers on how great his performance is, also given on how similar Sam is to Ian; Samantha Morton plays his wife, Deborah and Alexandra Maria Lara as Annik Honoré, a journalist from Belgium with whom Ian Curtis had an affair.
Ian wanted to create a band after seeing the Sex Pistols, inspired in Buzzcocks, Bowie and The Velvet Underground, they had in mind a punk band that then lead to a unique style (Post-punk) giving inspiration to bands today like Interpol , Editors etc.
Joy Division, like they said, will end when one of the members will decide to leave the group, in 1980 just before their tour in America Ian killed himself struggling with depression, epilepsy and a unhappy marriage. The last song performed by Curtis was "Digital". The new joy division were called NEW ORDER.
Curtis's memorial stone, is inscribed with "Ian Curtis 18-5-80" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
